The Meru Sombetini gas station branding project brings together canopy branding and roadside identification. It also includes fuel price signs, pump island signs, vehicle guidance, and service-area recognition. By using one visual system across the whole station, the project shows a consistent brand image from the road to the pumps.

Project Background
Meru Sombetini needed a complete fuel station signage design that could communicate its identity at different viewing distances. Motorists on the road needed to spot the station, check fuel prices, and see available services before entering.
Inside the forecourt, the signs also had to show where the pumps were. They had to mark the fuel directions. They also had to guide vehicles to the entrances and exits.
The project therefore required more than a logo on the canopy. It needed a coordinated system connecting roadside visibility, customer information and internal wayfinding.
Client’s Main Requirements
The main project requirements included:
- Creating a consistent Meru Sombetini identity across the complete station.
- Improving long-distance recognition of the canopy and roadside pylon.
- Presenting petrol, diesel and kerosene prices in a clear hierarchy.
- Identifying individual pump islands and fueling positions.
- Guiding vehicles through entrance, exit and fuel-selection points.
- Distinguishing Meru Card, Mart, Wash, Care and Gas services.
- Maintaining one visual system while using different service-category colors.
Signage Design Challenges
The main design challenge was adapting the brand to signs with very different proportions and functions. The canopy fascia extends across a large structure, while the pylon presents information vertically to road traffic. Drivers view pump island and directional signs at shorter distances, so the signs must communicate more immediate instructions.
The pylon also carries several levels of information. It includes the Meru logo, three fuel price rows and multiple service panels. A clear visual hierarchy was needed. Drivers could first identify the brand, then read the prices, and finally see the additional services.
Another challenge was introducing pink, blue, orange/yellow and green service colors without making the station appear visually fragmented. The design solves this by keeping red, yellow and white as the dominant brand palette.
Our Complete Gas Station Signage Solution
The finished signage system uses red as the main background color. Yellow lines help with recognition. White areas display the logo or key information. These elements continue across the canopy, pylon, pump islands, directional signs and service graphics.
Curved lower edges and flowing yellow shapes appear on several parts. These include the raised canopy logo panel, pylon, and entrance or exit signs. This repeated design detail helps connect signs that have different sizes and purposes.
The result is a complete station identity. Each sign has a clear role. All signs stay visibly connected to the Meru Sombetini brand.
Key Signage Components
Gas Station Canopy Fascia
The canopy is about 24 metres long and 9.5 metres wide. It is the station’s largest branded surface. Its red fascia creates a bold visual block. The continuous yellow line improves recognition. It also connects the different elevations.
A raised Meru Sombetini logo panel forms the main identity point on the canopy. The central brand panel is about 2.4 metres wide. It includes a curved yellow section. This section connects to the horizontal fascia line.
The completed station follows this design closely. The logo panel stays easy to see from the road. The red and yellow fascia creates a clear frame above the pump islands.

Pylon Sign and Digital Fuel Price Display
The installed gas station pylon sign provides the main roadside identification for the station. Its sign body is about 7.3 metres high and 1.8 metres wide. This lets the brand and fuel details sit in a clear vertical order.
The white upper section presents the Meru logo against a clean background. Three digital price rows identify petrol, diesel and kerosene. Below the prices, separate panels display Meru Card, Mart, Wash, Care and Gas.
Color-coded service icons allow motorists to scan the available facilities without confusing them with the primary fuel information. The curved red and yellow graphic at the bottom also links the pylon visually with the canopy logo panel.

Pump Island Signage
The pump island system has white vertical columns with red accent bands. It has numbered fueling positions and ad panels above the dispensers. Pump numbers help customers and station staff distinguish the different fueling positions.
Each pump structure also includes a dedicated advertising area. This allows the station to display promotional or service information without placing additional freestanding signs around the fueling area.
The white columns add contrast under the red canopy. The red bands link the pump structures to the station branding.
Directional, Entrance and Exit Signs
Vehicle guidance is supported by fuel-direction signs and separate entrance and exit markers. A freestanding sign shows petrol and diesel directions.
It also includes a larger advertising panel.
This helps drivers choose the correct fueling route.
The red entrance and exit signs use large white arrows together with “KARIBU” and “KWAHERI.” Their curved edges repeat the visual language used on the pylon and canopy graphics.
The completed site also includes a compact red directional sign near the forecourt entrance. People can understand its simple arrow quickly without competing with the nearby fuel price pylon.

Meru Mart and Service-Area Signs
The completed station includes a clearly identified Meru Mart area, extending the brand beyond the fueling canopy. Additional service signage identifies Mart, Care, Wash and Gas.
Each category retains the Meru logo and red brand section while introducing its own identification color:
- Pink for Mart
- Orange/yellow for Care
- Blue for Wash
- Green for Gas
This system helps visitors spot services at a glance. It also keeps a consistent link to the main station identity.
Design and Functional Details
The signage system works through three levels of communication. The canopy and pylon establish the brand from the road. Fuel prices and directional signs provide decision-making information as motorists approach. Pump numbers and service signs then guide customers within the forecourt.
Red creates continuity between all major signage components. Yellow acts as a secondary recognition line, while white provides contrast for logos, arrows and fuel information. Designers use service-category colors in smaller areas to support navigation without replacing the primary brand palette.
The completed station shows that designers created the signs as one system, not as unrelated products.
Completed Project Result
The completed Meru Sombetini station presents a clear and coordinated identity across every major customer touchpoint. Motorists can spot the red and yellow canopy from the road.
They can read the digital fuel prices.
They can see the available services on the pylon.
Inside the station, numbered pump islands, directional signs and service identification help organize the forecourt. The Meru Mart frontage follows the same visual identity, extending the brand from fuel sales to the store area.
By aligning the canopy, pylon, pump islands, and wayfinding signs, the project gives each element a clear role.
These roles include branding, price information, vehicle guidance, and service identification.
